The Kids Eat Smart Foundation is celebrating those who help make their breakfast programs in schools across the province happen.
This is Kids Eat Smart Week across Newfoundland and Labrador, and the foundation kicked things off earlier today with an event at East Point Elementary in St. John’s.
Executive director Celina Stoyles says the provincial government gives them nearly $1.4-million in funding every year but it takes $5.8-million to pull their programs off, which is why all of the support they receive is so important.
Stoyles says inflation has driven up the cost of running the program by 29 per cent.
She says Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest rates of child poverty in the country, and 1 in 3 children lives in a food insecure home. In that context, she says they ask that people consider supporting Kids Eat Smart clubs in their area.
