A Bonavista man has been charged after allegedly hitting speeds of up to 200 km/h on the Trans Canada Highway.
RCMP clocked the 59-year-old at twice the posted speed limit while he was racing eastbound near Long Harbour around 11:30 Wednesday morning.
His licence was suspended and his pickup was seized and impounded.
Speeds of up to 200 km/h mean that your vehicle is covering more than 55 metres every second.
That does not allow appropriate reaction time in the event of a road hazard as your brain cannot react fast enough to take safe evasive action.
RCMP say the impact force is also dramatically increased in the event of a collision.
