A Newfoundlander and one of the country’s longest-serving female Sergeants-at-Arms has passed away in Toronto.
Elizabeth Gertrude Gallagher moved to Ontario eight years ago to be closer to her grandchildren.
She was appointed as Sergeant-at-Arms in the House of Assembly in 1997 – becoming the first woman to serve in the role in this province and only the second woman in Canada to do so.
She started her professional career in nursing, serving from 1959 to 1973 in the operating room of the old General Hospital in St. John’s.
Gallagher passed away on Thursday at the age of 87.
