A new amendment to the bylaws that will now allow heat-pumps on the front of heritage buildings in St. John’s will have little to no impact on the dignity of such homes according to the city.
Currently, heat-pumps are not permitted on the front of houses in the historical areas of the city.
Chief planner Ken O’Brien says the new amendment will allow the units in front as long as they can fit in and do not “detract” from any of the historic features of the house or building.
O’Brien acknowledges that heat-pumps and mini-splits are becoming really popular and he doesn’t want to dissuade anyone who wishes to have one installed.
“We’re just trying to find a way that people can use them while maintaining the look of their heritage building,” he says.
