Workers at the Corner Brook Civic Centre have voted to strike, but they aren’t heading to the picket lines just yet.
According to CUPE, 95 per cent of workers with local 4386 have voted in favour of strike action.
Affected workers are said to be responsible for “every aspect” of the venue, including creating the ice and setting up for events.
Local president Craig Gardner contends that they are the “lowest paid workers in (their) classifications on the island,” and in a time where the cost of living keeps increasing, wages have not kept up.
He says they can’t hire and keep workers with the current wage.
The union is now in a legal position to strike, but says it is looking forward to a conciliation date on October 19th in hopes that an agreement can be reached.
