An unusual vessel belonging to a controversial marine conservation group is in St. John’s Harbour, and it is turning heads.
The MV Brigitte Bardot, a trimaran belonging to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, tied up at the docks earlier this week.
The society, based out of San Juan Island in Washington, has drawn controversy over its alleged destruction of vessels involved in the commercial whaling industry.
The society is also a staunch opponent of the seal hunt.
“Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas.”

The Brigitte Bardot earned its first claim to fame in 1998 for setting the world record for powered circumnavigation of the world. The vessel has since gone by several other names. It was obtained by the Sea Shepherd Society in 2010.
The ship flies a black flag, similar to the jolly roger, emblazoned with a skull above a crossed trident and shepherd’s crook.
