There were no reported injuries, however property damage was extensive following a single-vehicle crash in the centre of the city last evening.
Emergency crews were called to the scene on Smith Avenue at about 10:20 p.m. and arrived to find a sedan overturned in the road. Reports from the scene say the southbound car left the road and struck a stairway and retaining wall, flipping onto its roof and coming to rest in the road.
Witnesses also say the female driver of the car left the scene on foot, but she was quickly found and taken into custody by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. The 65-year-old ended up blowing over three times the limit, despite being under court order not to consume alcohol
She was held for court.
Area residents on the scene expressed concern over the frequent high speeds of motorists on the small residential street, and say the outcome of this incident could have been much worse had it occurred a short time prior as parishioners of a nearby church were leaving a service.
