Twenty-year-old Lucas Dawe of Conception Bay South has been given a four-month sentence for taking a human skull from a crypt in Foxtrap.
According to information revealed in court today, the initial complaint of a human skull discovered in CBS originated from a friend of Lucas Dawe. The report stated that Dawe had a skull wrapped in a sweater on the date of April 5, 2019. The skull’s jawbone was missing.
The friend informed police that Dawe hid the skull in a wooded area, where it was located by the RNC in the early morning hours of April 6.
The Agreed Statement of Facts says Dawe was in possession of the skull for a year and a half, after he retrieved it from a crypt at one one of four All Saints Anglican Cemeteries in Foxtrap. He cleaned it with boiling water.
The crypt was open enough for Dawe to reach in and take the skull.
At sentencing today, Dawe told the judge that he’s sorry, and that he was drunk at the time.
Judge David Orr says as it is a serious offence, denunciation was necessary. He handed down a four-month sentence for indecently interfering with human remains.
In addition, Dawe was given thirty days for two thefts from the Circle K in CBS.
With credit for time served, Dawe has 42 days left to serve in jail, followed by 12 months probation.
Rev. William Parsons of All Saints Parish is present in court.
Rev. Parsons says a final resting place is sacred and not to be touched under any circumstances.
But he says the church wishes Dawe well, and will offer support to him as necessary. @VOCMNEWS
