Officials wasted no time in taking down signs as the Costco in the capital city’s east end closed its doors for good.
The new store in Galway will be ready for the official opening on Danny Drive Thursday morning at 8:00.
Some concerns remain however. Some shoppers have told VOCM News they use Metrobus to get to Costco, a service not currently available in Galway.
One woman says she shops at Costco regularly, but that won’t be possible in Galway because she has to take the bus.
St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen says the city is looking at a possible pilot project for bus service to Galway in the fall.
While Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker and MHA Paul Lane have raised questions about possible traffic congestion and slowdowns in the area of the Ruth Avenue roundabout, few shoppers approached by VOCM News shared those concerns.
Costco Move a Good Sign for the Economy, says Breen
The mayor of the city of St. John’s says Costco moving to Galway is a good sign for the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Today is the last day for the retail store in its Stavanger Drive location.
Mayor Danny Breen says that the move to Galway shows that our province’s economy is moving in the right direction. He says the move is a vote of confidence for the province.
As for the concerns for traffic in the area, Breen says that while there will be challenges, he is confident that the current traffic system in place can handle it.
He says the roundabouts will be particularly tough because people aren’t used to them , but that we just have to pay a bit more attention when in those areas.
