It’s been a long time in the making, but the largest Costco store in the country finally opened its doors in Galway this morning. And people were already in line hours before.

Marie from St. John’s was among the first in line this morning and brought her own chair for the wait when she arrived in line at 4:00 a.m..
She says the early bird gets the worm.
Marie was excited about the new store. She says she lives in the west end so she loves it, but she’s sure there’s people that aren’t so happy.

Costco, then known as the Price Club, first opened on Stavanger Drive back in 1995, spurring commercial development in the area. The move to Galway was first announced more than two years ago. Initial indications were that the store would be open for Christmas of last year, but that was delayed until now.
The impact on business in the east end, and potential traffic congestion in the Mount Pearl – Galway area have both been cited as concerns.
