A former Liberal cabinet minister has passed away.

Dave Gilbert passed away in St. John’s on Canada Day. He was 84.

Gilbert was born in Haystack, Placentia Bay and operated a Ford dealership for some time.

He served on the Grand Falls town council before turning to provincial politics.

He was elected to the House of Assembly in 1985 and served as Minister of Works, Services and Transportation under former Premier Clyde Wells.

Cremation has taken place. The funeral service will be held from St. James United Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
