Police have since left a cemetery in CBS that was the center of an investigation into the discovery of human skeletal remains – but an underground crypt at the cemetery that was uncovered during the investigation has yet to be fully restored.
For days, the RNC held a presence at the old cemetery, no longer in use, and for days investigated the site of an old, double underground crypt, covered by two large slabs.
Those two slabs have been removed from the crypt, and are now resting on wooden logs. The opening of the crypt has been covered by plywood, being held in place by large rocks.
It is believed that is where the skeletal remains came from.
Since discovering the remains on April 6, police have arrested and charged 20-year-old Lucas Dawe of CBS with indecently interfering with human remains, possessing stolen property, and breaching a court order. He’s due back in court May 1. And while rumours have been swirling online, police have not yet released anything official about what happened, or why Dawe was found to be in possession of the bones.
Police investigators removed contents from the crypt last weekend, placing the material in large plastic bags. The investigation is ongoing, with more charges possible.
The cemetery is the oldest of four in Foxtrap, linked to All Saints Anglican Parish. Most of the graves date to the mid-to-late 1800s.
One side of the crypt is engraved with the name of John Butler Senior, who died in 1853 at the age of 72.
