The an alternate location for the replacement of the H.G.R. Mews Centre is in Mundy Pond Park, right where the soccer pitch currently lies. But, one St. John’s City Councillor says not to worry.
The city’s first proposal was the gravel parking lot across from the current Mews Centre. That location is still on the table, according to the Ward 3 Councillor, Jamie Korab.
Korab also says the proposed new site for the soccer pitch is a good fit.
He says it is already in a recreation hub with the softball field and skate park, making it a great area for a centre, next to Mundy Pond. Korab says there are still some things to figure out, and they want to hear from the public.
The councillor says they understand the current soccer field is a green space, but it would be re-located to the Ayre Athletic Grounds as they already have pitches and can easily re-configure.
Korab says it would involve a full overhaul at the Mundy Pond Park with beautified green spaces and more.
He says there would be a buffer put in place for residents and the walking trails would not be affected. There would still be a green space if the soccer field were to be removed as the field is used for both organized sports and leisure activity – something the city would not take away.
A public engagement session is planned for July 30th at the Mews Centre.
Councillor, Jamie Korab says they will have two separate sessions on the 30th.
He says one is from 10:00 a.m. to noon, and the second from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
If you can’t make it, you can go on engagestjohns.ca and have your say.
The new Mews Centre will be a modern building similar to the Paul Reynolds Centre in the city’s east end, but not as big.
