The President of the Royal Astronomical Society remembers well the moment when man first landed on the moon.
This Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing, with celebrations planned around the world, including St. John’s.
Randy Attwood was 12 years old in 1969 and remembers the historic occasion very well.
He was “glued” to the television all that week, and the memory has stuck with him for the last half century.
Attwood says human kind has always been fascinated with the moon, and being able to reach it is still an amazing feat.
The timing was exactly right, with the advancement of technology and a global political atmosphere that triggered the space race.
He says blank cheques were being written and it’s still amazing to think that the feat was achieved in a mere eight years.
