Crews with St. John’s Regional Fire Department and the City of St. John’s fought for hours to contain and extinguish a large garbage fire overnight at the Robin Hood Bay landfill.
SJRFD Platoon Chief Dean Foley says around midnight they received a call from on-site security reporting a fire.
Crews from Kent’s Pond Fire Station, Kenmount Station, and a water tanker from Paradise Station all responded to the fire, which was roughly 75 metres square.
With the assistance of City of St. John’s employees, who used heavy equipment to bury the burning garbage, the blaze was declared under control nearly six hours after the initial response.
Due to the fire, there was a delayed opening at Robin Hood Bay Landfill this morning.
Garbage collection within the City of St. John’s was not affected.
