The Nunatsiavut Government is calling on the Premier to order Nalcor Energy to suspend plans to flood the Muskrat Falls reservoir until mitigation measures are taken to reduce the potential impact of methylmercury on the Lake Melville ecosystem.
Impoundment is expected to begin around Aug. 7.
Johannes Lampe says their concerns over contamination are real and must be addressed before the reservoir is flooded. He says the Premier and government have done little to ease their concerns.
Government established the Independent Expert Advisory Committee following an 11-hour marathon meeting with Indigenous leaders, effectively ending a protest at the hydro dam. The committee’s recommendation calling for further mitigation has not been acted upon.
The Nunatsiavut Government is disappointed that they are being told by Premier Dwight Ball and Nalcor CEO Stan Marshall that it is now too late to cap the wetlands, and that flooding is imminent.
