One of the complainants in the Jian Ghomeshi trial was in St. John’s last night for a panel discussion on sexual assault and the law.
Ghomeshi, a popular host on national TV at the time, was acquitted on all counts.
When asked if she would go through the legal system again, Lucy DeCoutere was of two minds.
DeCoutere says it was a pretty intense sacrifice that took up several years of her life. She says personally, she wouldn’t do it again, but publicly, yes she would. It’s a complicated answer to a complicated question she says.
The event was organized by Emily Deming and Chris Brookes, co-creators of the award winning app, Consent Walk the Walk.
Brookes explains why they chose to tell the story through an interactive walking app.
He says they thought that being in a place where something like this happened will provoke a deeper way of thinking about it. That’s what they hope it does.
The app recently won an international award in Croatia and Deming and Brookes decided to use the cash portion of the prize to hold the panel event and continue the conversation.
The app is available for download here.
