They’re not telling people to give up shopping at Big Box stores, but a movement started by two entrepreneurs running two completely different businesses aims to convince people to buy local. The “I Buy Local” campaign swings into high gear this weekend with a sidewalk sale and display downtown St. John’s.
Abu Sayed, the owner of Wild Hood Clothing, and Jon Butler, the owner of Lunch-in, say buying local means keeping the money in the community as opposed to giving it to a large corporation which takes the money out of the province.
Butler encourages people to, once in a while, check out the option of buying local.
He says it’s fine to go to the Big Box stores but instead of spending the entire $100 bill there, take $20 out of it once a month and buy local.
Many businesses will participate in a sidewalk sale downtown—primarily on Water Street—from noon to close on Saturday.
