The Minister of Natural Resources says local mining companies have been “stellar” in their approach to worker safety and meeting environmental standards.
The comments come following the highly critical “Voices From the Ground” report into the global mining industry published last week, which accuses mining companies of profiting from the pandemic and failing to take adequate safety precautions in light of COVID-19.
Minister Siobhan Coady says while the report was concerning, the province works very closely with the local mining industry to ensure standards are met.
She’s not aware of any reports from local communities with concerns about the mining industry.
Meanwhile, the Department of Natural Resources yesterday announced a series of measures to help local mining operations through the pandemic.
They include deferring certain fee payments, and waiving other charges to assist the mining, quarry and mineral exploration industries.
As well, the department says it is working with the mining industry and public health officials to ensure effective operation while adhering to public health measures.
Questions have been raised about whether or not consideration is being given to opening the Quebec – Labrador border to help with the movement of employees working on mine sites.
Natural Resources Minister Siobhan Coady says those discussions are ongoing.
There is also some movement in and out of Wabush Airport, according to Coady.
