COVID-19 has forced the postponement of jury trials in the province until at least September, and discussions are now underway to see how and when the courts can get those matters going again.
The Department of Justice says all three levels of court have announced plans to expand on the number of matters being heard via video and telephone technology and clear up any backlogs created by the suspension of in-person hearings.
The Department acknowledges that the justice system is complex and not all matters can be heard via virtual technology.
The Department is working with the court and public health officials to identify ways in which jury selection and jury trials can resume with adequate physical distancing measures in place.
