The provincial government is not ready to drop Discovery Day, but is willing to take a look at it and open up the discussion.
Labrador West MHA Jordan Brown told the legislature yesterday that his wife’s family has hunted and fished in Labrador for thousands of years, and the NunatuKavut Community Council calls it a day that perpetuates colonialist policies with a legacy that has detrimentally impacted NunatuKavut Inuit for generations.
Discovery Day, June 24, commemorates the discovery of the province by John Cabot in 1497. It is celebrated on the nearest Monday which, in this case, would be Monday coming, the 22nd.
Minister Andrew Parsons would not commit to a plan to do away with the holiday, but is agreeable to discussions.
