The Mayor of Flatrock is warning non-residents of the dangers of swimming in the river following the death of a 25-year-old woman.
Darrin Thorne says locals have been swimming in the area near Stiles Cove Path for more than a hundred years, but only by those who know it well.
He says this is not the first tragedy Flatrock has seen.
Thorne says his heart sinks when he hears sirens during the summer, especially after heavy rainfall like they had earlier this week. He automatically thinks of someone who may be swimming.
Signage is posted at the entrances of the trail.
Thorne says the town does not condone swimming there.
He has a strong message for anyone considering a dip in the river.
Anyone not from the area should stay away, even if you think you are a strong swimmer. Thorne says he has lived there for 30 years and never swims there as it is far too dangerous.
