As many community celebrations have been cancelled due to COVID-19, firefighters are urging extra caution if you decide to host your own Canada Day fireworks.
St. John’s Firefighters Association president Craig Smith says consumer-grade fireworks can be extremely dangerous if mishandled.
Whether a firecracker or a bottle rocket, Smith says improperly-managed pyrotechnics can cause serious injuries or start fires. Even sparklers can burn in excess of 500 C.
Smith encourages anyone planning to host their own fireworks this year to follow all municipal and provincial guidelines, review all safety instructions, and consider participating in virtual celebrations.
The City of St. John’s is one of many municipalities that has cancelled its annual Canada Day fireworks display in favour of an online celebration.
