The St. John’s Fire Department, born out of the ashes of the Great Fire of 1892, marked its 125th anniversary today by raising the flag at three stations: Central, Mount Pearl, and Paradise.
The original department consisted of 22 paid firefighters and three stations: central, eastern, and western with an auxiliary on the south side. The St. John’s Regional Fire Department today services the capital city, Mount Pearl and Paradise with 277 personnel at eight stations.
The equipment consisted of horse-drawn steam engines and horse-reel carts. Four motorized fire trucks were introduced in early 1920 but horses continued to be used up until 1957.
Fire Chief Sherry Colford says there are events and displays to mark the occasion
You can see a video of a vehicle extrication, there’s a high-angle event and there’s a tour of the museum, all on their Facebook page.
