A 20-year-old man spent Saturday night in the lockup after he was found in possession of a canister of bear spray in St. John’s.

Just before 11 p.m. RNC responded to a report of a man acting suspicious near a downtown business.

Following a brief encounter the man fled on foot, but police apprehended him a short distance away.

The man was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and resisting arrest.

Along with the bear spray, a large quantity of cash and drugs were also seized.

He was held to appear in court on Sunday.
