The FFAW is calling for stronger support to address the challenges faced by the inshore fishery in light of the appointment of a new Fisheries minister.
Elvis Loveless is the MHA for Fortune Bay – Cape La Hune, a district that has seen major growth in the aquaculture industry in recent years.
FFAW President Keith Sullivan is welcoming Loveless in his new role, but says what the inshore fishery needs right now is a “champion” who will stand up for harvesters and work to strengthen the wild fishery.
Sullivan says much work remains to be done to accomplish commitments made to the union by government in the last election.
Those commitments include improving transparency in price negotiations, investing in young harvesters and ensuring sustainable and secure work in the aquaculture industry.
