The Independent member for Mount Pearl-Southlands says he is “not one bit surprised” by the suspension of Bruce Chaulk as Chief Electoral Officer.
Paul Lane was the first to tip off the province to a Citizen’s Representative report into allegations of harassment and bullying that had been presented to the Speaker of the House months ago.
The report was subsequently passed on to the House of Assembly Management Commission who recommended Chaulk’s suspension with pay, which government accepted yesterday.
Chaulk is suspended pending the outcome of an independent review.
Lane, who was approached by people concerned about the status of the report says he’s not surprised by the action taken.
He says given the allegations and the details given to him by several people who have been involved in the process he’s not surprised, but he’s disappointed that it took three months “to see the light of day.”
