Memorial University is using all terrain wheelchairs to help those with mobility issues travel off the beaten path.
It’s called the GRIT Freedom Chair.
Dr. TA Loeffler with Memorial’s Department of Human Kinetics and Recreation has been using two of the chairs over the past three years to allow people of all abilities to enjoy the outdoors, regardless of the terrain.
The chair was built from mountain bike components, meaning it’s able to navigate all types of ground, and is lever-powered.
They have two of them, and she’s says they’ve become a “wonderful addition” to their teaching.
