A portion of the Burin Peninsula is moving to Alert Level 3, and Sacred Heart Academy in Marystown is closed to in-person instruction following an outbreak among students in the area.
There are 30 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the province today, 25 of which are in the Marystown area, including 22 in children under the age of 12.
A portion of the Burin Peninsula from Epworth to Red Harbour including Marystown and Burin is moving to Alert Level 3 as of midnight tonight.
While Sacred Heart is moving to online instruction, other schools in the area remain open.
Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says most of the symptoms started to emerge over the weekend, and there are a large number of contacts both within and outside the school community.
She says none of the children in that age group are vaccinated and there have been lots of opportunities within and outside the school community for the virus to spread.
Of the 30 new cases reported today, 27 are in the Eastern Health region, and three are in Central Health.
There are a total of 62 active cases in the province including four people in hospital.
