A local rugby player is adding a national championship to his long list of accomplishments.
St. John’s rugby player, Ben Newhook, a Rock Senior Men’s team member, is currently playing for the University of Victoria and won the Canadian University National Championship, Sunday afternoon.
Newhook’s Vikes defeated the defending national champions from the University of British Columbia.
The win marks the university’s first national championship, and their first time defeating UBC in five years.
Newhook was named to the tournament’s first team all-star list.
He now adds a national championship to his list of achievements including captaining the Rock under-19 team to a national silver medal in 2018, and playing for Canada’s under-20 national team in the World Trophy Qualifier, all in the same year.
