The Coast Guard is investigating the source of a slick in the water off Postville, Labrador, first noticed a few days ago.
The Coast Guard’s Environmental Response Team and the CCGS George R. Pearkes have been sent to the scene.
A surveillance flight was conducted on Monday and observed some 2,000 to 3,000 litres of pollutant on the surface of the water.
By yesterday that dissipated to about 980 litres, according to the Coast Guard.
Postville AngajukKak Glenn Sheppard says they’re looking for answers, and he’s pointing to the arrival of Woodward’s on the weekend with a fuel delivery as a possible source of the spill.
Woodward’s CEO Peter Woodward says they examined the vessel for potential leaks and found nothing. He says their own reconnaissance appears to show something leaching from the land east of the community.
Mayor Sheppard is casting serious doubt on a land-based source of the spill based on knowledge of the area and his own observations.
Meanwhile, the Nunatsiavut Government is looking for answers on the potential environmental impacts of the fuel slick near Postville.
Land and Resources Minister Greg Flowers is concerned about the potential effects on birds and other wildlife.
He says the Nunatsiavut government will help the Coast Guard in its investigation where possible.
