The provincial government has put up over $730,000 to partner with the Gathering Place for a temporary low-barrier emergency shelter.
Premier Dwight Ball says they are hoping to have the shelter in operation by September.
He says it will support an effective response to any second wave of COVID-19 that may occur.
Space at the Gathering Place will be converted to provide staffed, emergency, overnight support for up to 30 people, seven days a week. This will operate from 8 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
During the day, guests of the shelter will have access to a wide range of existing supports that are provided by the Gathering Place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Meanwhile, work is underway to develop a permanent shelter through NL Housing.
