It’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to the impact COVID-19 has had on markets for local fish products.
When the pandemic struck there were serious concerns about demand for species like snow crab, which is a staple in the cruise ship industry.
FFAW President Keith Sullivan says demand for crab has since shifted to grocery stores.
He says consumption habits have changed and crab is doing well on the retail level, especially in the U.S.

Sullivan acknowledges that’s not true of all species, and this has been a more difficult year for lobster.
In the meantime, he says things are improving from what they were when COVID first hit.
He says some products are starting to recover as things settle out, and while the interruption in restaurant and cruise ship activity did have an impact, it’s not all “doom and gloom.”
