The Better Business Bureau has issued a warning about the rise of a new scam known as “Amazon brushing.”
It’s when a parcel shows up on your doorstep, but you didn’t order it.
Foreign third-party sellers are sending people a box of random items, using your address or Amazon information to post a fake glowing review to boost their business. As many people rely on the reviews before ordering products, these false reviews could drive business to the scammers.
Kristin Matthews of the Better Business Bureau says you should be concerned if you receive a package you didn’t order.
While they may just be using your home address, Matthews says someone may have access to your Amazon account. If you receive unordered merchandise, they may have access to phone number, password, and credit or bank information. Once that information is out there, it may be used for numerous crooked enterprises.
In order to protect yourself, Matthews advises changing your account passwords on a regular basis, and keep a close eye on your credit report and credit cards.
According to the Consumer Protection Act, Matthews says if you receive paid-for merchandise, you are legally allowed to keep the items.
