A horrific terrorist attack targeting Jews celebrating the first day of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia resonated around the world and cast a pall over what is ordinarily a joyous celebration.
Fifteen people were killed and dozens more injured after a father and son armed with guns, started shooting at families gathered for Hanukkah celebrations.
Among the dead are a 10-year-old child and a Holocaust survivor.
Jews gathered in the parking lot of the Viking Building in St. John’s yesterday for the first day of Hannukah, and Rabbi Chanan Chernitsky says despite the shock and horror of the events in Australia, they decided to go ahead.
“As a rule, Jews never buckle down in fear, so it was never a thought to cancel the celebration. We did up the police presence, the RNC have been very kind, supportive and generous.”
