RCMP Traffic Services East have seen a marked increase in excessive speeders on the highway over the long, warm summer.
RCMP Sergeant Matt Christie says drivers appear to be taking advantage of the divided highway—particularly in the area of Butter Pot Park where there is a long straight stretch. He says there’s also a perception among some drivers that even if they do meet the police in that area, there’s no way for officers to turn around and pull them over.

Earlier this summer there was a case involving a number of high-performance vehicles street racing in the area. That investigation continues.
Sergeant Matt Christie says despite that, most of the vehicles they pull over are not high-performance and include ordinary streetcars and SUVs.
The penalty for speeding 51 km over the posted speed limit is $520 for the first offence, with fines increasing with each subsequent offence—not to mention the impound, tow and licence reinstatement fees.
