All three levels of government have committed money to upgrade and connect a trail from west to east in St. John’s.
The project will see the construction of the Kelly’s Brook shared-use path by upgrading and connecting existing segments of a trail between Columbus Drive and Kings Bridge Road that parallels Empire Avenue. The trail, which will connect the east and west ends of the capital city, will be for pedestrians and cyclists.
Ottawa is putting up $1.1-million, the provincial government $755,000, and the city $378,000.

Construction is expected to start next year.
Mayor Danny Breen says the trail upgrades will provide an opportunity to increase mobility throughout the city. As an example, he says you could leave the King George V soccer field and get to Columbus Drive using the trail.
