The Minister of Immigration, Skills and Labour says it’s important that the province not become isolationist in its approach to employment.

For some time, TradesNL has been lobbying for an NL Benefits Agreement that would give preference to local workers on major contracts.

Not so fast says Gerry Byrne – while it may sound like a good idea, it could also create added problems for the local workforce, which is sought after right across the country.

He says a so-called “shotgun clause” could create similar agreements in other provinces like Alberta where Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have long benefited from work opportunities.
