An animal welfare group which has generated controversy in this province in the past for its efforts in bringing an end to the commercial seal hunt is receiving federal funding as part of an initiative to prevent, capture and remove plastic pollution from the environment.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare—or IFAW—is one of two local groups to receive a share of $270,000 announced today from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Ottawa has introduced a Zero Plastic Waste Initiative banning single-use plastics including straws, bags, and cutlery.
The IFAW will “develop best practices and remove marine plastic litter in Newfoundland harbours” according to a government release issued today.
TGM Tours Inc meanwhile is also being provided with funding to help reduce plastic waste and pollution in the Gros Morne region.
