That violent incident on Spencer Street in St. John’s Wednesday morning was not a random attack. The RNC says the parties involved were known to each other.
A man collapsed on the street at about 9:30, leaving a trail of blood on the sidewalk. He remains in hospital in stable condition.
Police, who are still investigating, also say that there was no weapon used in the altercation.

Meanwhile, the level of crime in the older parts of St. John’s grabbed the attention of the House of Assembly yesterday.
NDP Leader Alison Coffin raised the issue in the Legislature and has been speaking with cabinet ministers about it. She has been told that the matter of crime and the issues which lead up to it are a priority for the Social Policy Committee of Cabinet.

She says it’s not just about Spencer Street. She hears of little pockets of this type of activity happening in rural Newfoundland and Labrador too.
Anyone with information or dashcam or CCTV footage from the area is asked contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
I've followed up with Minister Warr on our request to have further meetings about what's occuring in our neighbourhood on Spencer Street.
This is a complex issue that requires multilple government ministries to come together.
I've demanded we work together to resolve this now— Alison Coffin (@AlisonCoffinNDP) October 21, 2020
