It’s been a long time coming, but the Information and Privacy Commissioner has finally released the results of his audit on Access to Information timelines related to former Fisheries and Land Resources’ department.
Commissioner Michael Harvey conducted the audit to examine and document the department’s handling of access to information requests during the 2017-2018 fiscal year.
During that time, the department processed 90 access to information requests but failed to respond within the 20 business day time frame for 20 – or 36 per cent – of those requests.
Several sources of delay were identified by the Commissioner. They include delays in responses from staff, in transmitting records, obtaining approval and in seeking and obtaining consultation.
A number of recommendations have been made.
Michael Harvey concedes that while his report was delayed due to the pandemic and some competing priorities, he believes the results are still meaningful for all public bodies.
