The Qalipu Mi’kMaw First Nation will be watching the removal of the wreck of the Baltic III from Cedar Cove very carefully.
The process of removing the wreck, which has been sitting on the bottom since February of 2025, is moving into the final stages, and plans are now getting underway to have the vessel cut into pieces and removed from the site.
The owners of the vessel have hired Resolve Marine to complete the salvage work along with subcontractors JCL Investments and Newco Metals.
The first phase of the work, which involved the removal of cargo, oil and fuel from the wreck wrapped up earlier this year.
CAO of the Qalipu First Nation, Brad Evoy says they’re very excited to finally see the huge bulk carrier removed, but they will be watching to ensure that the environment is not harmed during the process.
He says they want to make sure that their “broader access for hunting and fishing and other pieces around the wider area is minimally interrupted. And that we can keep folks safe along the way.”
Work will get underway this summer and run through to the fall.
