St. John’s is working to create dialogue around affordable housing and possible solutions to diversify the city’s neighbourhoods.
The city and community partners have launched a new campaign asking “What does affordable housing mean to you?”
Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary says there are a lot of stereotypes and discriminatory attitudes surrounding affordable housing that create barriers for people.

O’Leary stresses the importance of dispelling the myths around affordable housing. She says some common myths are that it will reduce the value of your home, or bring trouble to a particular neighbourhood. She says the reality is that affordable housing is something everyone needs.
She says ensuring that everyone who can possibly access affordable housing is able to, will mean having a healthier community for all.
The City of St. John’s has over 400 affordable housing units right now, and is working the private commercial industry to incentivize and encourage affordable housing projects in all neighbourhoods of the city.
