The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District is allowing more indoor school sports to resume beginning next week.
As of Monday, school sports can resume based on where they would fall on School Sports NL’s yearly calendar.
This means table tennis and indoor soccer are the next sports to begin. However, schools can allow other sports, such as basketball, for practices and play—but not tournaments.
As well, weekday extracurricular activities can be extended for an extra hour, and school tournaments and practices will be allowed to take place on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. provided certain obligations are met.
According to Karen Richard, Executive Director of School Sports NL, allowing tournaments between schools is the biggest change they’ve made.
She calls it the biggest hurdle they’ve had to overcome. She says they worked to make sure contact tracing could be easily completed and that the schools are as safe as they can be.
