St. John’s City Council will be deciding what infrastructure changes they will be pursuing at Rawlins Cross at today’s meeting.
A pilot project was implemented in late 2018, which saw the intersection converted into a roundabout. Council narrowly voted to revert to the original design last spring.
Data collected by the city shows that the pilot project reduced the overall rate of collisions by over 50 per cent and when collisions did occur, they were less severe.
Over 1,800 people participated in a public feedback survey that found 64 per cent of those responded in favour of the pilot project, while 36 per cent liked the original configuration.
Some residents felt strongly opposed to the pilot project, many reporting that they felt less safe crossing the street.
A number of alternative changes have been considered as council prepares to proceed with routine roadwork and sidewalk infrastructure, work that the Rawlins Cross area is due for.
