There is no evidence of community transmission in Deer Lake even though the full extent of that particular COVID outbreak is still being assessed.
An elementary school student tested positive for the virus, forcing the temporary closure of Elwood Elementary while close contacts are contacted and tested.
It’s one of a cluster of recent cases in Deer Lake and the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the province’s school system.
The Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, says all of the cases seen to date are either traced back to travel or the cluster that was originally related to travel.
At this point says Fitzgerald they don’t have any non-epidemiologically linked cases which are the ones they’re most worried about.
