Today marks the 31st anniversary of the deadly shootings at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique.
A National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is held each December 6th to mark the tragic events of that day in 1989.
Fourteen women were murdered and fourteen others were injured as a result of the shooter’s hatred toward women.
A local activist and panellist with the Femicide Observatory delivered a presentation on misogyny to mark the anniversary of the shootings.
Jenny Wright delivered a talk to the Alexa McDonough Institute for Women, Gender and Social Justice at Mount Saint Vincent University which hosted a commemorative ceremony on Friday.
Wright spoke on the topic of Confronting Misogyny – From the December 6th Massacre to the Nova Scotia Shootings.
She says society needs to confront the common perception that these crimes are perpetrated by a so-called “lone wolf,” or attribute it to evil or severe mental health. She says it needs to be identified as misogyny.
