The Churchill Falls Review Panel has delivered its report on the Upper Churchill MOU to government, but when its findings will be released to the public, or whether a referendum will be held, is not yet known.
Premier Tony Wakeham, who had not yet seen the report when speaking to reporters yesterday, says the first order of business will be to have legal advisors look it over to ensure government doesn’t release anything that can’t be released.
Then government will look at tabling the document in the House of Assembly.
He says it’s too early to talk about a referendum – they have to get a deal first.
“Well, the first thing we’ve got to do is start negotiations. Obviously, we want to get the best deal for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, I mean, that’s always been the goal.”
“Let’s make sure we maximize the benefit for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. What does that look like? Who does it involve?
He says government cannot get a review and then “turn around and sit back.” He says they need some direction, and then “get moving.”
