St. John’s City Council managed to avoid raising property taxes in the budget delivered yesterday, instead turning to other means to generate extra revenue.
That means fee and fine increases across the board.
A general parking ticket will increase from $30 to $50, while flaunting the winter parking ban will cost you an extra $25, going from $50 to $75.
Getting in the way of street cleaning will set you back $40 while the maximum for traffic violations jumps to $75.
Paid parking rates are rising from $1.50 per hour to $1.75 an hour and parking in Churchill Square increases from 75 cents to $1.00.
Visitor parking permits will see a spike from $27.50 to $35.75 a year.
The city is also targeting calls for sewer backups, doubling the cost from $100 to $200, while a sewer dig and lateral repairs increase to $800, or $1000 for repairs greater than eight metres.
And finally, while property taxes aren’t going up, the water tax is by $15, going from $605 to $620 a year.
