The Water Street Pedestrian Mall in downtown St. John’s was praised as a success last summer, and this coming year the capital city is looking at ways to help more business reap the rewards.
The idea was born and after images surfaced on social media of a similar concept decades ago. Businesses and residents embraced the concept and it became a reality in July.
St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen calls the pedestrian mall an “amazing success,” praising how quickly area businesses were able to react to it.
A majority of businesses and residents have indicated they want to do it again next summer, and Breen says the city is working on ways to improve it, not just for shops on Water Street, but in other areas such as Duckworth Street as well.
He says you can’t have both streets closed due to fire safety reasons, so the city is going to work with businesses to be more creative so they can see more benefits.
